Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) at ICRM

At ICRM, our experienced team specializes in fertility treatments designed to give you the best chance of success. One of our most effective and straightforward options is intrauterine insemination (IUI), a procedure that increasing numbers of couples turn to when facing mild fertility challenges such as decreased sperm concentration or motility, unexplained infertility, or mild-to-moderate endometriosis.

How IUI Works

By placing sperm directly into the uterus, IUI allows a greater number of motile sperm to reach the egg, bypassing natural barriers such as the cervical mucus. This increases the likelihood of fertilization by reducing the distance sperm need to swim.
  • The IUI process begins with collecting a semen sample, which is then carefully washed and concentrated to select the most motile and healthiest sperm.
  • On the day of the procedure, a thin catheter is gently inserted through the cervix into the uterus, and the prepared sperm are deposited directly into the uterine cavity.
  • The procedure is similar to a Pap smear and is typically completed within a few minutes, involving minimal discomfort.

IUI is often combined with iperstimolazione ovarica controllata (COH), where medication stimulates the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, further improving pregnancy chances. Success rates with COH and IUI are approximately 20% per cycle, similar to natural conception in healthy couples. However, factors such as the woman’s age and specific fertility diagnoses can influence success.

If conception does not occur after 3 to 6 cycles of COH combined with IUI, a consultation is advised to review potential causes and discuss other options, such as proceeding to in vitro fertilization (IVF).
